There is a common misunderstanding about white supremacy throughout the U.S. Most people suppose that white supremacy centers on hate toward anyone that is not Caucasian. White supremacy is a belief in which individuals think that white people are superior to those of all other races, especially the black race. Individuals who possess and use their power to oppress others are deemed as supremacist. People who accept this ideology believe that the black race is, or should be, dominated by Caucasians. Some believers of the ideology also believe that white supremacists govern America. Due to misunderstandings and belief in the ideology, some individuals make themselves victims of white supremacy.
One should strengthen their political understanding before becoming a believer or non believer of white supremacy. One can strengthen their political understanding by becoming familiar with the structure and affairs of government, politics, and the state. For believers of the ideology, white supremacy revolves around power. White supremacists conceal their strategies of control to avoid others from overcoming oppression.
From an historical standpoint, white supremacy arose in America during the European colonization of the United States when blacks were slaves. Even though the 13th amendment abolished slavery and set slaves free, freedom lies a little bit in the eyes of the beholder. Slaves feeling as though they were enslaved to another system that treated them similar to slavery, they did not feel free. Freed slaves became wage slaves after the abolition of slavery. Freed slaves had to depend on low and unreasonable wages for financial stability due to their social standpoint in America at the time. American Marxist economist Richard Wolff, states in a conversation with American philosopher Cornel West, “You can free a person from slavery, but what freedom is that if the next thing they are is, enslaved to another system that treats them similar.”
Pan Africanists, historians, and other individuals believe that white supremacists controlled wage slavery. White supremacists at the time were very knowledgeable of how hard black people could work and the fact that they had to settle for low paying jobs. Well aware of their disadvantage, white supremacists were able to force wage slavery among blacks due to their financial hardship at the time. “To the extent they know who you are, the more racist they become, because of studying you, they see your potential” (Dr. Umar Johnson). White supremacists oppress blacks because they fear black potential. Black potential demonstrates that blacks have the ability to possess the power that white supremacist refuse to share.
Though people deem blacks as a pronounced casualty of white supremacy, the ideology applies to people of all races. Victims of white supremacy are successfully programmed to believe consciously, or unconsciously, that one group is better than the other. Examples of these conscious and unconscious beliefs can be seen through perceived attractiveness. Successfully programmed individuals perceive men and women of lighter complexions, especially white, more attractive than others who possess darker shades of brown. Dark skinned women imply that they are well aware of how the general public views their skin tone, through the saying “black and beautiful.” Women of lighter complexions never mention their race or skin complexion when stating that they are beautiful. Though most people may or may not have good intentions, a lot of people have unconscious beliefs and biases that they are not aware of.
Believers of the ideology must know and understand that just because one is deemed as, or claims to be a white supremacist does not mean they are. A fine illustration of the misconception can be seen through the Klu Klux Klan. The Klu Klux Klan is an extremist right-wing secret society in the US. Most people view the KKK as white supremacists while they are white extremists who believe and teach hate. Klansman try to gain their power through terror and oppression to those who disagree and counter their beliefs. The KKK does not incorporate money and business within their pursuit for power, and being so, it is impossible for them to have power over any race without being extreme and willing to die for what they believe in.
The KKK currently displays their lack of power through its beliefs. White extremists feel as though the white race is facing extinction and being so, race mixing is forbidden. Klansman interpret and reference wordings in the Bible that signify or indicate races should stay pure, and due to their interpretations, race mixing is viewed as a major sin. Racists preserve and protect the white race by forbidding interracial relationships and teaching hate to their offspring. White extremists feel as though America is trying to erase their history by doing things such as, taking down the Confederate flag at the South Carolina statehouse, demanding the Confederate flag be removed from the uniforms of Alabama state troopers, and, the removal of Confederate statues throughout the South. White extremists reckon that they should not have to cater to the needs and feelings of others being that the country was built specifically for white Christians and not minorities.
The KKK can not acquire the power and authority to govern America by terrorizing blacks. Most members of the secret society believe that Jews run America’s government, federal banks and, media that controls America. White extremists feel as though they are disenfranchised and neglected by America’s government. Klansman reckon that the government has developed a system to oppress and imprison white racists and being so, white racists must unite with one another to overcome and destroy the Jewish government. The KKK holds the Jewish government responsible for allowing a black man into presidency. It is clear through the KKK’s beliefs and actions that they do not obtain the power they strive for, and being so, they are believers of white supremacy and not white supremacists. Being a believer of white supremacy, Klansman hope to one day obtain the power to control America’s government, federal banks, and media. Until that day comes, Klansman will stand as believers of the ideology. Klansman will not be what they believe in until they have the power to end things that contradict their beliefs and teachings without being extreme.
Unity is the best solution for overcoming white supremacy and oppression. Though people must unify with one another to overcome white supremacy and oppression, each individual must think critically and realize why a further break must be made.
Though white supremacy does not apply to non believers, are we people of the same struggle? Is there a significant amount of non believers that have still been successfully programmed to believe that one group is better than the other? Even though white racist view themselves as superior to other races, are they currently in the same predicament as a lot of minorities?
